The Existence of Amy Summary

Amy has a normal life. That is, if you were to go by a definition of ‘no obvious indicators of peculiarity’, and you didn’t know her very well. She has good friends, a good job, a nice enough home. This normality, however, is precariously plastered on top of a different life. A life that is Amy’s real life. The only one her brain will let her lead.A fictional story that depicts the reality of mental illness behind a perception of normality.

The Existence of Amy Review

I rated this 5 stars.

I’ve read a lot of fiction with a main character living with anxiety, depression and OCD. This has been one of my favourites. It was so refreshing to read a book where the character had a mental illness and they were an adult. I found Amy incredibly relatable and a breath of fresh air. It was told from her perspective and was a realistic portrayal of living with OCD, trying to juggle mental illness with triggers, work-life, social occasions and expectations from others.

It was in equal measures hopeful and realistic in the portrayal of everyday difficulties. I really related to Amy when her internal monologue addresses how her past self would have loved to do the things that she has the opportunity to do yet isn’t getting involved. The feelings of regret, guilt and self-loathing are balanced by having supportive people in her life.

I’d recommend this for people with Anxiety/OCD and anyone who wants to understand more about how it feels.
