Fun, Falls & Forests in the Atherton Tablelands

As part of our East Coast Australian Road Trip, we ensured that we had a jam packed itinerary for Cairns. Cairns is in the North of Queensland, right in the tropics and we were there right at the end of the dry season (end of November). One of the trips that we planned was to the Atherton Tablelands. We went on a day tour with Uncle Brian’s. The same company we also used to visit Cape Tribulation & the Daintree Rainforest.

Atherton Tablelands

The Atherton Tablelands is a large area that covers much of North Queensland. There are many National Parks within the boundaries and multiple areas of outstanding beauty. It is home to Queensland’s highest mountain, Mt Bartle Frere.

We were picked up from our hostel at 7:40am ready for an adventure. Our guide for the day was the quirky ‘Cousin Eli’ and he named us all as cousins for the day. We were in our swimmers, had our towels ready and eagerly awaiting what we would get to see.

Babinda Boulders

An area of the Babinda Boulders is also known as the Devil’s pool as so many people have drowned here due to swimming in unsafe areas over the years. There is also a dead man’s walk built in to transport the bodies without people of the public having to see them…. Make sure you swim only in the safe swimming zone and don’t act like an idiot.

Josephine Falls

Josephine Falls is one of Australia’s most beautiful locations. We visited towards the end of the dry season so it wasn’t in it’s full cascading glory but it was still beautiful. You can go swimming in one area that it is safe and you should not stray out of it as otherwise you are risking death by slipping on a rock or drowning.

Lunch at the Tea House

The Tea House is in the township of Milla Milla and the wonderful owner set out a 2 course buffet spread for us. There was a vegetarian option and then BBQ chicken legs, couscous, salad, bread rolls with a Sticky Toffee Pudding, custard and cream for dessert.

Milla Milla Falls

Made famous as the waterfalls of the Mysterious Girl music video and Herbal Essences advert. Your visit to Milla Milla Falls isn’t complete until you’ve perfected the hair flick! Give it your best Nicole Scherzinger.

Lake Eacham

A perfect Crater Lake where no water flows in or out. It is important that you don’t apply suncream or insect repellent immediately before getting in otherwise you are risking it being a greasy layer in the water for the next 100,000 years. Apply your cream at least 30 minutes before swimming. You go swimming with the fishies and you might even spot a freshwater crocodile!

Where have the most beautiful waterfalls been that you have visited?
