This month it is Mental Health Awareness Month in Australia. I wanted to publish a post relating to mental health every day of the month so that I can personally raise awareness. You can find all posts, posted & upcoming on my schedule. Music is an important part of life. It feeds our soul, gives us something to relate to & often gives us lyrics that describe our feelings so perfectly that you can’t believe you didn’t write it yourself.
When I am in what I call the dark place, or in a bad place with anxiety or depression, I feel like it’s a lot of effort to do things. Listening to music allows me to feel like I’m being more productive, even if I’m still lying on my bedroom floor. Sometimes, I get into a place where most music can’t comfort me, where even hearing it makes me have to turn it off or I feel really angry. I don’t really know why this happens. There are certain songs though that get me through.
Some would argue that if you’re feeling sad, then lyrical music will make you feel worse but I often find that the opposite is true. Maybe some people think the world is bringing me down today so I’m going to put on my cheerful playlist because I need to hear happiness to feel happy but that’s just not me.
When I am in a state of depression, feeling empty & like I have a crushing weight on my chest, the last thing I need is ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams or ‘Uptown Funk’ by Bruno Mars making me feel more separated than ever. I need songs where I can feel that the artist understands emotional struggles, I need the lyrics, not a catchy dance tune.
