2 Day Urangan, Hervey Bay, QLD Itinerary

We spent 2 nights in Urangan, Hervey Bay as part of our Brisbane to Airlie Beach road trip this June. Hervey Bay is a fishing town that is also well known for being the main place that people travel to Fraser Island from. We didn’t go to Fraser Island this time but when it’s summer again we definitely want to visit.

We stayed in an Airbnb apartment in Urangan which was great for 5 adults but would also be great for younger families. It had 2 double rooms (one with an en suite) and a twin bedroom. The family bathroom had a bath and a shower.

There was plenty of room for everyone to move around comfortably. There was a living room, dining room & kitchen all good sizes as well as a balcony with a table & chairs on, perfect for breakfast as it is in the sun. The balcony faces a grass park and the sea.

I would definitely recommend it & you can find the property here.

Day One

We arrived in Urangan at around 3:30pm after driving from Brisbane so once we had checked into our Airbnb we went straight out. As it is winter, the sun starts to set at 5pm so we went to the beach and walked towards the pier. Urangan pier is really long, it’s just under 1km from start to end.

At around the halfway point I noticed some benches that lined up perfectly facing the sunset so I sat down. Everyone else carried on moving up the pier but I want to be present in the moment. It sounds cheesy but sometimes you’ve just got to do it.

I actually saw the sun disappear behind the water and it was so beautiful. The sky went orange, pink and purple and I just felt so relaxed. It made a change from going to sleep at 6pm exhausted from the farm work!

At the end of the pier, people were feeding pelicans fish that they had caught.

Day Two

Wake up early and watch the sunrise from the pier. Fishing here is very relaxed. You could spend the first couple of hours fishing or relaxing at the beach. The pier actually has metal water tables set up so you can wash off your gear too.

After that, you can go to the Fish & Chip shop for lunch. They offer a catch of the day as well as a standard menu. The afternoon is the perfect time to go to the go-karting track. We visited Hervey Bay Go Kart Track which also had a water slide (closed for winter).

In the evening, visit Bayswater Restaurant for reasonably priced drinks in a beautiful, stylish bar. There are even patio heaters built in to the ceiling outside so you can stay warm in the winter!

Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay is also close to Fraser Island and though you can do a Day Trip there, we wanted to spend more time exploring. We decided to leave it until another time but you can go on an organised tour or get the ferry over. Be aware that you can only drive 4x4s on Fraser Island.

Have you visited Hervey Bay yet? What would you recommend?
